Nelson "HAMMER" Beideman Seminar Series

Public Lecture Series

The Large Pelagics Research Center 2008 Seminar Series is named in honor of Nelson "Hammer" Beideman. This series pays tribute to a successful fisherman, an insightful friend and colleague, and a great advocate of fisheries research and conservation. As a swordfish boat captain and co-founder and Executive Director of Blue Water Fishermen's Association, Nelson helped initiate some of the most effective collaborative research projects between commercial fishermen, NOAA scientists and conservation organizations. He was highly successful in promoting efforts to reduce sea turtle interactions with pelagic longline fleets. A true friend of science, in 2001 Nelson was among a core group of industry leaders who called for the creation of the Large Pelagics Research Center so that gaps in knowledge of Atlantic tunas, sharks, billfish and sea turtles could be filled.
